Ethereum Layer 2 Solutions Process More Transactions Than Mainnet
Layer 2 networks Arbitrum, Optimism, and Base now process over 10x more daily transactions than the Ethereum mainnet, validating the rollup-centric scaling strategy.
In a landmark shift for the Ethereum ecosystem, Layer 2 scaling solutions are now collectively processing more transactions per day than the Ethereum mainnet itself, signaling the maturation of the rollup-centric roadmap that Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin championed years ago.
Data from L2Beat shows that Arbitrum, Optimism, and Base together handled over 12 million transactions in the past 24 hours, compared to roughly 1.1 million on Ethereum's base layer. This represents a tenfold increase in Layer 2 activity compared to just one year ago, driven by lower fees and faster confirmation times.
"We're witnessing the vision of Ethereum scaling finally coming to fruition," said Ed Felten, co-founder of Arbitrum developer Offchain Labs. "Users are getting the security guarantees of Ethereum at a fraction of the cost, and that's attracting an entirely new wave of applications and users."
Coinbase's Base network has been a particularly strong performer, processing over 4 million daily transactions as its ecosystem of decentralized applications continues to expand. The network has become a popular destination for social applications, gaming, and DeFi protocols targeting retail users.
The shift has significant implications for Ethereum's fee dynamics and tokenomics. While mainnet gas fees have declined substantially, the increased activity on Layer 2s still contributes to ETH burn through data posting costs, maintaining deflationary pressure on the token supply. Ethereum's price has responded positively to the data, rising 4.3% to trade above $4,200.
