A World Cup for the World

FIFA president Gianni Infantino unveiled the complete format for the 2030 World Cup at a press conference in Zurich, confirming the tournament will be co-hosted by Spain, Portugal, Morocco, Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay — spanning Europe, Africa, and South America in a celebration marking the competition's centennial.

The expanded 48-team tournament will feature 104 matches played across 20 stadiums in six countries over 40 days. Group matches will be distributed geographically, with knockout rounds alternating between continents before the semifinals and final take place in a yet-to-be-announced host city.

AI Refereeing

"The 2030 World Cup will be the most inclusive, technologically advanced, and environmentally sustainable tournament in football history," Infantino declared. The tournament will feature AI-assisted refereeing technology that can make offside and handball decisions in real-time with millimeter accuracy.

The carbon footprint of the intercontinental format has drawn criticism from environmental groups, but FIFA says it will offset all emissions and has committed to using only existing or temporary stadiums — no new permanent venues will be constructed.

Economic Impact

Combined economic impact across the six host nations is projected at $12.8 billion, with Morocco expected to benefit most significantly from infrastructure investments. Ticket prices will range from $30 for group stage matches to $600 for the final, with 500,000 tickets reserved for fans from developing nations at subsidized prices.
