Historic Triple Crown Winner Emerges as Youngest Jockey Dominates Belmont Stakes
At just 19 years old, Maria Santos becomes the youngest and first female jockey to win the Triple Crown, making history at Belmont Park.
Maria Santos, a 19-year-old jockey from Louisville, Kentucky, has etched her name in horse racing history by becoming both the youngest and the first female jockey to win the Triple Crown. Riding the three-year-old colt Thunderstrike, Santos completed the sweep at Belmont Park on Saturday before a crowd of 92,000 spectators and millions more watching worldwide.
A Race for the Ages
Thunderstrike, a 12-1 longshot entering the Kentucky Derby just five weeks ago, has captured the imagination of sports fans around the world with his remarkable journey from overlooked contender to Triple Crown champion. The colt won the Belmont by four lengths, the largest margin of victory in the race since 2018.
"I've dreamed of this moment since I was five years old, watching races on TV with my grandmother," Santos said through tears during the post-race interview. "She told me that barriers exist to be broken. Today, we broke them all."
Breaking Barriers
Santos' achievement comes in a sport that has historically been dominated by male jockeys. Only a handful of female jockeys have ever ridden in any Triple Crown race, and none had previously won one of the three legs. Her sweep of all three has been hailed as a watershed moment for gender equality in professional sports.
The victory has already had a measurable impact on the sport. Racing organizations report a 340% increase in inquiries from young women interested in pursuing careers as jockeys since Santos' Kentucky Derby victory last month.
