James Webb Telescope Detects Signs of Biological Activity on Distant Exoplanet
NASA's James Webb Space Telescope has detected atmospheric biosignatures on exoplanet K2-18 b that are consistent with biological processes, potentially the strongest evidence yet for extraterrestrial life.

In what could be one of the most consequential scientific discoveries in human history, NASA's James Webb Space Telescope has detected atmospheric signatures on exoplanet K2-18 b that are consistent with biological activity. The findings, published simultaneously in Nature and Science, show the presence of dimethyl sulfide (DMS) — a molecule that, on Earth, is produced exclusively by living organisms.
K2-18 b, located 124 light-years from Earth in the constellation Leo, orbits within its star's habitable zone and has been a target of intense study since the Webb telescope's launch. The planet is classified as a "Hycean world" — a type of planet with a hydrogen-rich atmosphere and a liquid water ocean.
The Evidence
"We want to be very careful about how we communicate these findings," said the lead researcher. "What we can say with confidence is that the atmospheric composition of K2-18 b is consistent with biological processes. Whether that means life actually exists there requires further investigation."
The team detected DMS at concentrations approximately 20 times higher than would be expected from non-biological chemical processes alone. They also confirmed the presence of methane and carbon dioxide in ratios that, on Earth, would strongly suggest biological origin.
What's Next
NASA has announced that K2-18 b will receive priority observation time on the Webb telescope over the next two years. Additional observations are needed to rule out unknown geological or chemical processes that could produce similar signatures. If confirmed, the discovery would answer one of humanity's oldest questions: are we alone in the universe?
