Marvel Studios Announces Phase 7 Slate with First AI-Directed Feature Film
Disney's Marvel Studios reveals its ambitious Phase 7 lineup, including the controversial announcement of a film where AI played a significant role in directing key sequences.
The Future of Cinema
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige took the stage at a packed D23 Expo to reveal the complete Phase 7 slate, featuring 12 new films and 8 Disney+ series spanning from 2027 to 2029. But it was the announcement of "The Eternals: Convergence" that generated the most buzz — and controversy — as the first major studio film to credit an AI system as co-director.
The film, which will use an AI system to plan and execute complex visual sequences involving thousands of digital characters, represents a new frontier in filmmaking. The AI was trained on decades of Marvel's visual storytelling to maintain consistent style and pacing across massive battle sequences.
Industry Reaction
"This is not about replacing directors — it's about giving them superhuman tools," Feige clarified during the presentation. "The human creative vision drives every decision. AI helps execute at a scale that would be physically impossible otherwise."
The Directors Guild of America issued a cautious statement, noting that they are monitoring the development closely but acknowledged that the project complies with current guild agreements. Some prominent filmmakers expressed concern about the precedent being set.
The Phase 7 Lineup
Other highlights from the Phase 7 announcement include a new Avengers film, standalone features for several fan-favorite characters, and a groundbreaking crossover event that will span both theatrical releases and streaming series simultaneously. Box office analysts project the Phase 7 slate could generate over $15 billion globally.
